What heat actually does to hydraulic oil
Hydraulic oil oxidises faster as it gets hotter. The working rule is that oil life roughly halves for every 10 degrees Celsius above about 60. A machine running at 85 degrees in the afternoon is degrading its oil several times faster than the same machine at 55.
Oxidation produces varnish and sludge. Varnish is the thin lacquer that makes proportional and directional spools sticky, which shows up as slow or erratic response long before anything actually fails. Sludge blinds filter elements early and settles in the reservoir.
Heat also thins the oil. Thinner oil means a thinner film between the vane and the cam ring or between the piston and the bore, which means metal contact under load. A VG 46 oil that is correct at 50 degrees may be marginal at 85. In genuinely hot operating conditions, VG 68 is frequently the better choice, though you should confirm the pump manufacturer’s viscosity window before switching.
What fine dust does
Gulf sand is fine and largely silica, which is hard enough to cut hardened steel. Particles in the 5 to 15 micron range are the destructive ones because they match the running clearances inside pumps and valves. They enter through three routes:
- The reservoir breather. As cylinders extend and retract, the tank breathes. Without a proper filtered breather it is inhaling site air on every cycle.
- Cylinder rods. A worn or damaged rod wiper drags dust straight into the system on every retract stroke.
- Top-ups and hose changes. Oil poured from an open drum on an open site brings in more contamination than weeks of normal operation.
Of the three, breathers are the cheapest to fix and the most often ignored. A desiccant or fine particulate breather costs very little against the pump it protects.
ISO 4406: what number should you target
ISO 4406 expresses fluid cleanliness as three numbers, counting particles above 4, 6 and 14 microns. Lower is cleaner, and each step down represents roughly half the particle count.

Set the target from the most sensitive component in the circuit, not the average. One proportional valve in the system means the whole system needs proportional-valve cleanliness. New oil from a drum is typically dirtier than these targets, which surprises most people, so filter oil into the tank rather than pouring it in.
The four filter positions and what each one protects
- Suction filters sit before the pump inlet and stop large debris reaching the pump. They must be coarse, because a restrictive suction filter causes cavitation, which destroys pumps faster than the dirt would have.
- Pressure line filters sit after the pump and protect everything downstream. This is where you put fine filtration to protect proportional and servo valves. They must be rated for full system pressure.
- Return line filters clean the fluid before it re-enters the reservoir and catch wear debris generated by the actuators. This is the workhorse position in most systems.
- Breather filters control what enters the tank as air. In dusty environments this is the highest-value filter per rupee spent.

Micron rating and beta ratio
A micron rating alone tells you very little. What matters is the beta ratio, which states filtration efficiency at a given particle size. Beta 10 equal to 200 means that for every 200 particles of 10 microns entering the filter, one passes through, giving 99.5 percent efficiency at that size.
Common beta values and what they mean:
- Beta = 2 gives 50 percent efficiency, which is nominal filtration and largely marketing
- Beta = 75 gives 98.7 percent
- Beta = 200 gives 99.5 percent, the usual specification point for quality elements
- Beta = 1000 gives 99.9 percent, used for servo systems

Two rules override the schedule. If the clogging indicator shows bypass, change the element that day, because a filter in bypass is passing unfiltered oil straight to the pump. And after any component failure that released metal, flush the system and change every element before running the replacement part, or the new component will fail the same way.
Cooling is part of filtration
You cannot filter your way out of a heat problem. If reservoir temperature is consistently above 80 degrees under normal load, address the cause before increasing filtration. Common causes on Gulf sites are a cooler matrix blinded with dust, a failed cooler fan, a relief valve dumping full pump flow across itself because it has been set too low, and an undersized reservoir on a retrofitted machine.
A fixed displacement pump running full flow over a relief valve turns almost all of that energy into heat. Moving to a variable displacement hydraulic pump or a load-sensing circuit often solves a persistent overheating problem outright while cutting fuel or power consumption.
Grease and centralised lubrication in dusty sites
Filtration protects the hydraulics, but the pins, bushes and slew bearings on construction equipment fail from the same dust. Manual greasing is unreliable on a busy site because it depends on someone remembering, and it delivers too much or too little.
A centralised lubrication unit delivers a metered quantity of grease to every point on a set cycle. The steady positive flow of fresh grease pushes contamination out of the joint rather than letting it grind. Combined with metering cartridges for accurate distribution, it typically pays for itself in pin and bush life alone on a fleet working in sand.

How often should filter elements be changed in a desert environment?
Take the OEM interval as a ceiling, not a target, and expect to halve it in heavy dust. Better still, fit clogging indicators and change on actual condition. Yashvi Hydraulics can advise on element intervals for your specific machines.
Is a finer filter always better?
No. A filter that is too fine for its position causes excessive pressure drop, and in the suction position it causes cavitation. Match the rating to the position and to the most sensitive component downstream.
